Mali: Belgium sends two transport aircraft and a medical helicopter


Transport aircraft C-130 "Hercules" of the Belgian Air Force with on board a medical helicopter Agusta A-109 flew Tuesday airbase Melsbroek for Mali, local media reported.

Ministerial Committee met on Tuesday in restricted about the situation in Mali, the chief ministers of the Belgian government decided to put an additional C-130 available to France for support in his intervention in the African country. Brussels also sent 70 military missions logistics and training alongside French troops already engaged in Mali, but, according to the head of the Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders, there will be no fighting troops Belgian African country.

Responding to the request of the Malian government, unable alone to defeat the Islamists destabilizing the country, France on Friday launched a military operation "Serval" to stop their advance towards the capital Bamako. Paris has requested the support of the Belgians and other partners in this conflict.


On the night of Sunday to Monday, the French Air Force struck Islamist positions in northern Mali and suffered its first loss. French soldiers lost a helicopter pilot. Losses of the Malian army amounted to 11 men.
