Piaggio presents the drone P.1HH derived from P180 Avanti II

On the occasion of IDEX 2013 in Abu Dhabi, Pieaario Aero Industries and Selex ES unveil P.1HH "HammerHead" drone large (15.5 m) directly extrapolated P180 Avanti II turboprop.

After two years of development, P.1HH "HammerHead" made its "roll out" (ex works) on 14 February 2013. The engines were started and the drone was riding on an air base in Italy. The first flight is scheduled for 2013. This flying machine developed by the Italian aircraft manufacturer Piaggio (owned by Indian group Tata and Mubadala Aerospace Ltd) and Selex ES, a Finmeccanica company, specializing in electronic information systems for defense.

The P.1HH is derived from Piaggio P.180 turboprop. It is therefore a canard UAV, equipped with two Pratt & Canada PT6-66B Whithney Propeller Hartzell five-bladed propellers. It has a wingspan of 15.5. It is truly an Avanti II unmanned able to take off and land autonomously and grow to 45,000 ft altitude is about 15,000 m during flights of 16 hours. The P.1HH is designed for surveillance missions and intelligence.

While sales of the P180 Avanti II erode the market for business aviation, Piaggio is much more profitable market surveillance. After having presented in July 2012 version MPA "Multi Patrol Aircraft" his turboprop, the Italian manufacturer is positioned on the niche drone.
